When you think of the Rottweiler, more often than not you tend to picture a fierce, confident guarding dog. A chunky, strong and often aggressive breed, the breed has certainly been given a lot of bad press over the last few years. However is this negative image really deserved or is there more to the Rottweiler than meets the eye?

Protecting the Family

Contrary to popular belief, the Rottweiler is not actually as bad as what people make out. Yes it has the ability to be overly aggressive and to be a superb guarding dog, but on the other hand the Rottweiler can also make an excellent pet. The problem with the breed tends to come from its owners. Due to the fact that the Rottweiler is prone to aggressive tendencies, it will need a firm handler. If you can train the dog from an early age and socialize it with children and strangers, then you could potentially have a very friendly, loyal companion. However, if you simply purchase a Rottweiler puppy and leave it to do what it wants to do, then you could possibly end up with a very badly behaved, dangerous dog.

So provided you spend the time training your Rottweiler, you should find that you are left with an obedient, gentle and loving companion. Another thing which people often believe is that Rottweilers are not good with children. In actual fact the Rottweiler tends to really like children and in a family environment they will often protect the children and lay down beside them whenever they go. That is not to say that they should be left alone with your children; especially when they are young. However you should never leave any dog with any child no matter what its breed as children can unknowingly cause the dog to become agitated. Another advantage to the breed is that they very rarely bark; especially if you own a male Rottweiler. They are more likely to stand and watch everything and this has gained them a reputation for being a little unpredictable. They do not always give much warning before they do attack and so that is another reason why good training should be given from an early age.

Generally when you put a Rottweiler into a family environment, it really does thrive. They love the attention from their human companions and provided you spend enough time with them they will live alongside you with very little problems. They are not ideal for an apartment however due to their size. So if you would like a Rottweiler as a family pet then you will need to ensure that you have the adequate amount of space for one. Overall with the correct training the Rottweiler can make a fantastic family pet. Loyal, obedient and particularly good with children, the breed may just surprise you.
