How did they get there?
“Has someone said food?! What’s that smell?! We are sooo hungry!' These amazing fluffy creatures were brought here as an aid in dealing with mice that plagued fishermen’s boat. In the beginning, there were only several cats that 10 years later got enormously multiplied.

The Cat’s heaven
'What a lovely carpe diem! There is nothing better than napping and sunbathing after a tasty lunch.' Aoshima Island cats are not too picky and they mostly get food from tourists. Tourists love this place
“Yap! People are coming! The boat with a new group of tourists has just arrived! Let’s go!” Cats don’t mind tourist coming, but at the end of the day, they want to be left alone. On this island, there are no cafes, restaurants or snack bars. You can’t even find cars! Residents acquire their necessities by taking a boat to the mainland. If tourists want to come here, the only thing they can see is just dozens of purr-fect felines. Brown, beige, black, gray, or white, whatever their color is, they are all so amazing! Some of them would rush to ask for some food, while the others would only beg for cuddles walking around tourists’ legs.

The island of Hello Kitty
“Look what I caught! I'm going to have a delicious lunch today!” As you can guess, this small island is known for fishing, same as the rest of Japan. It is also known as the land of the world famous cartoon character Hello Kitty, and by many other cat cafes in Tokyo, so the story like this doesn’t surprise us at all. Japanese are, in fact, huge cat lovers!

A lot of fun
“Hahahaha, what did you say? Akio failed to catch a mouse? He will never admit how clumsy he is!” Before the World War II, this island had 900 citizens and later their number started to decrease. Today, this Cat Island has only 15 permanent residents and they all belong to elderly population.

Far away from the others
“It’s my lunch! – No, it’s mine! “ Hmmm…It seems like these two fellows are arguing about something. We are sure that all those cats are not feeling bored at all! It must be interesting to live with so many feline friends! For tourists, this Hello Kitty Island is probably very adventurous!

Music classes for the best singers
It’s time for school! On the island you can’t see any human activity except the boatload of day-trippers from the mainland. In the following picture, you can see the abandoned school where today only cats can have the classes of music. Imagine that all of them start meowing (singing) at the same time! All the good cat singers come here now and start singing!

Fast Food thieves
It’s friendly to share and we’ve already heard of that! But, how many times have you thought when you were so hungry that it wouldn’t be such a great idea to share anything (in that moment)? Not even with your BFF? If it ever comes to your mind to visit this crazy but also a lovely island, please do not even think to eat any kind of food there, because those cats wouldn’t let you do that! It surely wasn’t a great idea for this journalist thinking he could have a snack. The best cat jumper has just taken it!
